Did you attend the California Healthcare Interpreters Association (CHIA)’s 23rd Annual Educational Conference in San Diego this year? If so, you were in for a treat. The conference, themed “Making Waves“, featured several speakers, including Elena Langdon, Director of the MasterWord Institute. Langdon led two presentations on healthcare interpreting: a two-hour sight translation workshop and a one-hour simultaneous interpreting presentation.

During the sight translation workshop, Langdon covered the basics of sight translation and when to use it in healthcare settings. Attendees then participated in several skill-building drills, and Langdon provided material for them to practice at home. The simultaneous interpreting presentation covered the basics of this modality, including why, when, and how to use it.
Langdon wasn’t the only industry leader in attendance. The conference brought together 300 professionals from across the healthcare interpreting industry, including Natalya Mytareva – CCHI Executive Director, Katharine Allen, Boostlingo Training Specialist, and Vonessa Costa, Senior Director of Quality & Member Engagement at Health Care Interpreter Network (HCIN). Langdon and other attendees discussed important topics such as new CCHI requirements for English proficiency, TV shows and apps for improving and learning vocabulary, and a curriculum for a medical student practicum with interpreters.
The main issue that the conference addressed was the need to increase the quality of training and interpreting standards in the healthcare field.
