Mila Golovine first got the idea to found a language solutions company while studying at the University of Houston Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship at the Bauer College of Business.

At the time, Golovine, originally from the former Soviet Union, was also doing occasional translation work. She decided to do some market research on the language industry for a school paper and found that it was a lucrative, worldwide industry that held plenty of opportunities for new businesses; MasterWord Services was born.

Today, MasterWord Services is a global language solutions company worth more than $13 million. The company is set to celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2013.

Golovine credits the success of her company, in part, to everything she learned as a student at the Houston Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship.

“The way the program is designed, they have team teaching, so they have professors, but they also have entrepreneurs,” she said. “We heard from people who succeeded and people who failed. It was an unbelievable opportunity because you could come to class twice a week and ask questions.”

Now Golovine is living the American Dream.

“I’m very grateful for this country and the opportunities that it gives,” she said. “We kind of criticize things around us, but I think this is really one of the very few countries where a person can achieve anything they want if they work hard.”

When she’s not busy running MasterWord Services or serving in a mentor capacity at the University of Houston Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship at the Bauer College of Business, Golovine enjoys playing tennis and spending time with her three children, two of whom are currently learning foreign languages.

“My older two kids have chosen (to learn) Chinese, and they’re loving it,” Golovine said. “I guess my kids are my hobby.”
